It’s great to outsource work to remote workers. You get a lot more done at a significantly lower cost. However; like everything else, managing remote workers has it’s challenges.
We had a remote team member who had very good qualifications, work experience and interviewed well. When we hired him, his productivity was great and we thought we had a star hire. But soon productivity started following. Initially we thought it was just a bumpy week or two but when things did not rebound, we decided to go through his activity screen shots. We used a time and activity tracking service that gets installed on the employees computer and records his time and takes screen shots randomly.
When we put the pieces together through the activity screen shots, it turned out that he was drawing a salary from us and also from another employer and was dividing his time between two jobs. No wonder his productivity had fallen so badly. We got rid of him and now monitor a little more often.
