Work environments are typically high-activity, high-stress. When you work in an office, the job can be so demanding that it is easy to work straight for hours without taking a break. That puts the body and mind under undue stress and over time results in physical and mental breakdowns. People fall sick and companies lose productivity due to sick leave or employees performing sub-optimally. That is where office yoga can help. It helps people de-stress, alleviate pain and avoid ailments such as a sore lower back, stiff neck, tight hips and shoulders and of course the ever lurking headache.
If you cannot go to yoga classes or similar, you can do certain activities at your workplace to help like sitting on an ergonomic pilates ball for back and spine strength and posture. There are also exercises that can be done from a sitting position at a desk, stretching arms, legs, neck because office work including hours of sitting in one position results in scoliosis, abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, and other conditions that may not be immediately obvious as they become visible later in life. People that keep finding excuses not to exercise are often those who spend the longest hours at their desk. Companies that decide to implement office yoga should also try to educate their employees about the importance of yoga and make sure everyone understands that they are being dragged away from work for their own good.
Doing certain poses and sequences at your desk will minimize your discomfort throughout the day, making it easier for you to focus on work. What is the absolute best yoga pose to take to the office? Well, whichever one makes you feel best, of course! However, there are definitely some poses that work best for the office. Office yoga adapts regular yoga exercises to the office space, simple stretches that can be done in some cases without moving from the desk and chair area. They can be performed without interrupting colleagues at any time of the day. They do not take much time, however, you can split them up throughout your day. Neck roll, cow stretch, seated forward bend and seated spinal twist are some examples. We recommend removing tight footwear, tie and belt before you begin.
In conclusion, doing yoga in the office will not only be fun but also bring about many other long term benefits for both employees and employers. If you are already doing yoga at work, let us know about your experience with office yoga. If not, we encourage you to try it and comment with the results.
