Around this time of year, we test golf clubs and then post the reviews on our website. Being an e-commerce company, our customers don’t get to physically hold and feel the clubs so we try to do a good job of explaining the clubs. Doing a comparative analysis also helps customers understand which club performs better under specific circumstances. It’s expensive, it’s time consuming and requires a lot of physical effort but it’s good for business.

We sell more hybrid clubs than anything else, so we test them first. We finally finished testing hybrids on Friday and posted the results on our website.

It is one of those things that if you like golf, it makes you drool and you don’t mind the aching backs and the very serious blisters. Aleve and Advil are the norm for aching backs and ready to fall joints. I have had to tape my fingers to lessen the pain of playing with peeled off skin – and loved it. And we hit shots upon shots upon shots. All those shots that are operator error are not recorded and there are many.

What I was particularly interested in was the new Apollo Acculite 95 grams and 75 grams steel shafts. Generally steel shafts are 120 to 130 grams. The Acculites are considerably lighter. I thought there would be considerable loss of control due to the lighter shaft but I was proven wrong. Lighter shaft translates to lighter club translates to faster swing speeds and that translates to greater distance – all that without loss of control – what’s not to love! The most exhilarating thing was testing on the golf course. With the # 3 hybrids I was out hitting other people hitting drivers. They would look at me as if I had some tremendous strength – I don’t – but it feels kind of good if people think that you do.

For the last five years, I have been sticking to my favorite hybrids, the Power Play Maraging (long discontinued) and refused to switch to a newer model but I finally found one that I know is better. I am switching to the Dynacraft Avatar XMOI. Gives you good trajectory, a larger hitting surface and wood like confidence. You really have to try hard to hit a bad shot with it. With the 95 grams Acculite shaft, it’s an absolute delight.

Even if you are not into golf, take a look at how we test and tabulate the clubs on our website. You’ll like it. It may give you ideas for your own business.
