How to be a successful blogger

Blogging can be fun but blogging can also be very lucrative. Many people start blogging because they think every body is doing it – then soon give up. You hear stuff like 'Oh blogging is a waste of time' and 'I tried that but didn't do anything for me'. If you ask what they wanted from their blog, they generally say 'Oh I don't know – just thought it was a good idea'. Well how can blogging do anything for you when you don't know what you want from it.

You want to be a successful blogger? Then heed the following advice:

Clearly identify the purpose of your blog, to yourself first and to your readers second. Is it for fun or business? If it is for business then narrow it down to your area of expertise or the service you provide.
Have a theme that matches your subject. If your blog is about the stock market, then a wild jungle theme may not suit you – then again it may. Put some thought into it.
Learn about plug-ins on an ongoing basis. They make blogging easier and more enjoyable.
Don't feel intimidated by what others may say. If you feel strongly about a subject, then express yourself. It's your blog isn't it. Your blog should reflect your thoughts, not some corporate mumbo jumbo.
Make it easy for your readers to subscribe to your RSS feed or via email. See the subscription options at the top right on this blog? Gives you ideas? You'll be surprised how many people would like to hear from you but at their convenience. Helps you build your mailing list.
If you are a frequent blogger and you have other related activities that may interest your subscribers, send out a weekly digest to bring everyone up to date.
Don't hesitate in referencing other peoples work on your blog. You see a good video or article, write a little summary and provide a link so your readers can also enjoy the content.
As your traffic grows, monetize it through Adsense, banner Ads and affiliate offers. But first get your traffic up.
Encourage people to leave comments and then respond to the comments. Helps build dialogue.
Promote – Promote – Promote. Your blog needs to be promoted just like your business website. This is a big world and unless you promote your blog, most people will never hear about it. That's a loss to both you and them. Traffic is the lifeblood of any business, conventional or online. The more the traffic, the better your chances of monetizing it.

So grab your pen or keyboard and start blogging.

New home for the online course – How to make money with no money

The course 'How to make Money without Money' has been moved to it's new home.

We decided to convert it to a membership site. That way, we can deliver content specific to the course and specific to the members. Previously the information was available to everyone. The $197 course is Free for a limited time but we are moving in the direction of a members only site.

Have you ever hired freelancers? I have and continue to. The current economic mess forced many people including myself to find qualified help but at a lower cost.

I had previously hired third party services but on relatively larger projects requiring formal documentation, signing of agreements, lawyers and accountants involved and the works. But I had not ventured the way of freelance work for small projects requiring competent help but only for a few hours to a few days.

In early 2009, I started looking for highly skilled help for a very small project. I wasn't sure if anyone with that kind of skill level would be willing to work on such a small project. But then I thought, what do I have to loose so I finally placed my requirements at an online marketplace for freelance work. To my surprise, quite a few people bid on the project and the job got done at a lower than anticipated cost.

Emboldened, I started farming out more work, even stuff that I normally do myself. This frees me time that I use to focus on other more productive tasks. Now I tell everybody that for small projects, use free lancers.

So who are these freelancers?

Freelancers are professionals who work for themselves rather than in a corporate setup. Many have been in corporate setups but have chosen to be independent contractors while others are still in a corporate setup but do freelance work on the side.

Are there any challenges? Yes. Here are the major ones:

Language – When you are dealing with professionals for whom English is a second or third language, communication becomes a bit tricky. Things that you may take for granted as 'understood or implied' are not. You have to explain in a bit more detailed manner.
Time zones: You may find an able professional in a country that is 12 to 14 hours ahead of you and that means when he is up and about, you are sleeping. So you have to make adjustments in your schedule to accommodate the time conflicts.
Speed: In my opinion, it generally takes a little bit longer to get things done compared to an in-house employee. The key culprit here is the different time zones. Also, at times, the freelancer is being pressured by another client who has a more pressing need so he may delay your work but a day or so.
