It is boring to look at the grey square / blob that passes for the default avatar / picture on WordPress. You can change the default avatar image to a custom one but it still is the same image for you, for additional authors and for those posting comments.

I was trying to figure out a way where everyone can have their own Avatar. It turns out there is no local method of doing that. You have to make a Gravatar at http://gravatar.com, tie it to the email you use for your blog posts and then your avatar / gravatar shows up on your blog. In addition, if you leave a comment on someone else’s blog under the same email, your gravatar shows up there also. A lot better than the default gray blobs.

By the way Gravatar is just a fancy name for an Avatar that is global. An Avatar is of course a fancy name for a picture or graphic.
